“Second Cupertino Campus”

Wednesday, April 19, 2006

If you’ve listened to Apple’s recent earnings webcast, or read the recent Reuters report, you’ve heard a slight mention of a “second Cupertino campus.” There’s not much information out there, but with Steve Jobs’ public testimony available from Cupertino’s City Council, we’ve got word (and quasi location [alt] details) straight from the horse’s mouth. The CCC’s website is woefully difficult to navigate, so I’ve encoded a Quicktime version of their webcast and uploaded it here. Steve seems pretty happy about Apple’s recent acquisitions, and hopes others on the city concil are too: “Since we’re your largest taxpayer, I thought you might be happy for us.” (Direct Link)

Notes: Now hosted by the kind folks at Internet Archive. The Cupertino City Council’s original webcast is located here. Also now on YouTube.

ha ha, what a love-in.

I wonder why Jobs would take the time to go down there personally? He’s hiding something! raspberry

It’s actually kind of interesting to see a presentation given by Jobs that’s less polished than his keynotes. Kind of a more human, aw-shucks, rib-scratching Steve Jobs. It almost seemed as if his next point of business would be to request that the city put a stop sign on his street to slow the traffic down..

Your Google link points to a spot south of 280, when Steve is clearly referring to properties north of 280 bounded by Pruneridge and Tantau, adjacent to the HP campus.

He emphasizes, frequently, the costs associated with the new campus - that Apple has chosen to spend more money to stay in Cupertino. And one of the council members suggests that Apple sends a representative to the economic development group.

Translation?

Steve: “Apple’s your biggest taxpayer. We could have left, but we didn’t. Don’t put any regulatory roadblocks in front of us as we build this new campus, and you better help out with the roads and other city infrastructure to support this new campus. A tax break or two wouldn’t hurt, either.”

Council: “Yes, certainly, we’ll be happy to provider fluffers at your request.”

Chris, be prepared for some uber digg bombing on the MT Serve. 36 diggs and counting.

Wow. They’re really packin’ em in at the council meetings…

And to think that I walked by the Cupertino council chambers Tuesday night, saw the low attendance, and decided to keep walking.
